Otroverts

I wonder if the majority of combat sporters/martial artists fall into this new category of personality types? Does chime with you? Are you bemused by large group social behaviours?

(Taken from ChatGPT via an article in the Guardian newspaper)

An otrovert is a recently identified, "third" personality type—introduced by psychiatrist Dr. Rami Kaminski in 2025—describing individuals who are comfortable in social situations but feel like permanent outsiders who never fully merge with groups. Derived from "otro" (other), they are characterized by extreme independence, original thinking, and a preference for deep one-on-one connections over group belonging.

Key Characteristics of Otroverts:

  • Independent Thinkers: They do not conform to group norms or peer pressure, often thinking for themselves and operating on their own wavelength.

  • The "Observer" Role: They are friendly and socially capable, often charming or witty, yet feel as if they do not belong to the crowd
  • Not Quite Introvert or Extrovert: Unlike introverts, they aren't necessarily drained by people, and unlike extroverts, they do not gain energy from being part of a large crowd or following the crowd's mood.
  • Deep Connections: They prefer meaningful, one-on-one conversations rather than being a "social butterfly".
  • Self-Worth: Their sense of self is not conditioned on group approval.

Dr. Kaminski cited historical examples of potential otroverts as Frida Kahlo, Franz Kafka, and Albert Einstein.

Just another silly, made up word to try and put a label on people.

Is it the pronoun you dislike?
It is the need some people have to use a label. Just silly. As an engineer, I am an introvert. It goes with the territory and is a very good quality to have in the field.
I am also quite certain there are quite a few other pronouns or adjectives used to describe me.
When I started out as a LEO, I had to have a psych profile (required of everyone). It came back as 'brutally honest', which is 100% accurate.

I have no problem with honesty, I am blunt to a fault. It’s much better to be factual and honest even if it makes people uncomfortable or upset. Everyone is entitled to their own ethos.

I’m fine with however people choose to define me, my best definition of myself is sincere.

The problem is when people automatically assume that if they are being blunt, they are also correct. It ain’t always so.

I identify as a fagg0t. Hear me out. The gay movement has a long history of adopting and repurposing negative labels in its own defence. And the word used to shame people of different orientations these days isn't 'gay' or 'queer'- it's the other F word

Don’t add fuel to this sad fire. Let it die, for Pete’s sake. 😅

For a bunch of self-described otroverts, there's a lot of wagons being circled in this thread. Maybe this thread could use a little less religious conversation. Don't get me wrong. I have a gay daughter and a trans daughter-in-law, and they're delightful. I agree with the general sentiment. But I think we could all get back to the topic at hand.

Personally, I think a lot of folks are paraverts, from "para" meaning alongside or nearby. Paraverts thrive in shared presence but aren't energized by direct social interaction like extroverts. They appreciate the company of physical presence, and don't find it draining as an intovert would. This might be a function of technology or a byproduct of the pandemic, but a lot of folks enjoy being around other people who have shared interests, without the pressure of direct interaction.

Key Traits
  • Comfortable with silence
  • Prefers companionship without conversation
  • Deeply attuned to atmosphere and emotional tone
  • Values presence over participation
  • Socially warm but not socially driven
  • Often the “calm center” in a group
Some examples:
  • Two people reading in the same room
  • Two or more people who enjoy walking together without talking
  • Working independently at the same table
Have you ever seen a group of people standing around a landmark all looking at their phones? They are probably all playing a game like Pokémon Go! together. They're mutually engaged and energized by the companionship, but with minimal conversation.

Ah you know me so well. 😁 definitely I was born 'paravert' being female and older than most of you I can say I was born like it.
No disco for me, I don't dislike any music but I do love classical and properly sung sea shanties. 😁

Describes me pretty well, too.

Brutally honest or just likes to express your opinion forcibly?

All true. It’s not my business with whom or how people do what they do with other consenting adults. I don’t judge or kink shame in any case. I judge people by their honesty and how they treat others. I can tolerate an honest bigot, they can and should be helped.

…cockles and mussels alive! alive! oh!

They are entitled to voice their opinions and biases. “This little light of mine…”

When I was a teenager in the era of early 1980s punk, I was called the f word you refer to more often than not because of colored hair or mismatched clothing, jewelry or the like. Ignorant people often say these things because they are afraid of things they don’t understand or can’t put in a box (see what I did there?). Often times law enforcement was fond of this word in reference to us kids. I pretty much never hear this word used any more. Words are just that. Some people used to like to use words like radical or bitchin to describe something they liked, I recently started using the phrase “yoga pants” for the same purpose. “That car was yoga pants!” My wife thinks I’m ridiculous, which is true, but I’m amusing myself with it until it catches on. You heard it here first.
