Karate Dad, I'm glad I could help. :) The footwork is the toughest and most critical part of the move.

kempo is a style that does not do sport karate often but there are a few kenpo schools out that are realy good at sport. I love sport but thats just me

The martial art you have chosen isnt about tourneys...but defense....therefore it will be hard to train and emphasize on tourney competition.

Focus yours/theirs eforts on finishing what was started...at least a goal....then look for other schools that deal with primarily tourney..

However, tourneys are desired by the younger practitioners.
