I'm wondering how far this social network penetrates the entire martial student body in the US...

If you added up all the martial arts web forum participants, how big (or small) is that number, as a percentage of all MA students? What percentage of schools have at least one student who is a forum reader (at least a consistent lurker even if not posting)? What percentage of schools have at least one Instructor (or school owner) who is in the group?

not to be a pain in the ***, but the statistics are going to vary a lot on the definitions of your terms. who is considered a web forum participant? someone who posts weekly? someone who posted somewhere once?

what counts as an MA? are mainstream western arts like boxing & wrestling included? what is a student? someone who trains regularly? someone who goes to a class for a week or two then disappears for a couple months?

like i said, i don't mean to be a pain, but the stats you arrive at are going to vary greatly depending on how these & other questions are answered.

Rough breakdown.

67.84% United States
6.58% United Kingdom
5.40% Canada
2.93% Australia
1.15% Germany
0.94% Finland
0.83% France
0.80% Japan
0.70% Philippines
0.69% Netherlands

14.86% California
10.29% New York
6.18% Texas
4.79% Florida
3.62% Illinois
3.58% Michigan
3.57% Massachusetts
3.45% Pennsylvania
3.43% Ohio
2.99% New Jersey

How many martial arts interested types are there? If we assume 250,000, then we've got about 6% passing through here, as members. 500,000 would make it about 3%, 1M 1.5%, etc.
Lurking, I can pull that number, it's around 300,000 each month according to our weblogs.
