There is of course the qestion on if I even want the headaches. Ive been self employed for 20 years. I like the freedom, but the hours are lousy. Working for someone else though...makes me feel tired when i think on it.

Can you split the difference, in a sense, with a franchise operation? Not necessarily for the photo studio (I know you've had bad experiences there)... but for a tea house/noodle place? I suspect that start up costs are probably pretty comparable... What you pay in franchising fees you end up paying in developing your own advertising, supply chains, etc.

It's comparable in costs. Franchises also require more start up capital and credit than I can bring to bear, and come with restrictions on what you can do.

Mama Fu's Noodle house for example lists these requirements
Total Investment: $325,000-$450,000
Initial Franchise Fee: $20,000
Royalty Fee: 5%
