I've noticed when rolling there are some positions you end up in only when rolling with white belts or black belts. White belts get there by accident or by mistake. Black belts get there creatively and with specific malicious purposes.
Today I had two such positions rolling with different white belts. One was a sort of leg entanglement where neither of us had any attacks available. One of us tried to recover guard from side control and ended up in some sort of 50/50 half guard where our arms are attacking each other's shoulders. We both just said, "I have no idea what to do from here."
The other was a white belt that just made one bad decision after another from bottom mount, and ended up with him sitting down and me standing past his hips. I don't even know what you would call that position. Standing guard? Stand control? At least this time I had an idea what to do.
That's what I love about this art. I've been doing this for almost 3 years now, 5 days a week, and there are some positions you get in that are completely new to you.
