In the same way that there are two types of board breaking (Power Breaking and Speed Breaking) there are two types of kicking, power kicking and speed kicking.

If you are heavy set (like me) you tend to rely more on power kicking which is where you use your body weight to generate the power necessary to kick. If you are of a lighter build you will tend to use the speed of the kick to generate the power. Just so I don't get flamed, you will notice I used the phrase "tend to" which means "not always but more likely to". You may be heavy set and use speed or lighter build and use power. The distinction I am trying to make is between types of kicks and not body types. Void where prohibited. Not available in UT, NM, NV and MA. CA residents add sales tax. All characters etc....

When you are in the air the power technique does not work as well because your body has nothing to push against. The speed kick still works because you can still generate enough speed while airborne.
