Actually what you need is start first with training so called "aerobic level" low intensity training. It can be running, walking, swimming or even Taekwondo. Minimum 30 min to 45 min 3-4 times a week. We did our max VO2 test first time late -80 and our "director of testing" told us that we have to go back to basics. Pretty much everyone had to start with running and some had to start with walking. According the results we did too much high intensity training..and we were all in our national team.

So I think ( because your age etc. ) you should start with walking or really low intensity running ( you should be able to talk same time ) If possible go and get max VO2 test then you know where you are..Later you can start with higher intensity training.

“Maximal oxygen uptake (VO[SUB]2[/SUB]max) is widely accepted as the single best measure of cardiovascular fitness and maximal aerobic power."

I went from 50 ml/kg/min to 65 ml/kg/min in 12 months and then we decided that's enough. We started with running 3-4 times a week, 40 min each time, then later running 5 x 3 min High intensity, after that we moved Taekwondo 5 x 3 min with 3 min recovery, last step was 3 x (10 x 45 sec) Taekwondo recovery 1 min / 5 min. Now that time competition time was 3 x 3 min with one minute recovery.
