I was a bit floored when I saw this pop up when I uploaded the pictures.

it was getting dark, but it was still light enough for the camera to shoot without hiccups.

I might ghave done some nob digging, trying to eliminate the broad focus area since it has been messing up simle shots for me this weekend, but I have NO idea what happened here...40 shots like this....

it's been a long weekend, the scouts are doing a 50 miler and yours truly is part of the support caravan. I swear I put 50 miles on my own feet....

Help me out here, these pictures are odd. Cool, but odd.

It looks to me like the Saturation is mucked up. The only way ive ever done that is by playing with a blend of brightness settings and see-in-the-dark-o-vision.
Was it day or night, and was the camera on standard settings?

Your camera was set to the landscape mode (you can see this in the EXIF data stored with the photo.) This would generally raise the F stop, but yours was set to F5.6 (kind of in the middle.) I'd also guess that your white balance was off the mark, but I can't see that in the data.

It's tricky taking photos at dusk.

it was early evening.
but I have been running on fumes (long story, pictorial to follow) so I cannot recall what I did to the camera.

It was still light out, though fading.

Help me out here, these pictures are odd. Cool, but odd.

I can't be certain, but I see one thing that stands out to me.

First, you had put the camera in 'Landscape Mode' (or you put it in auto and it chose Landscape mode). Landscape Mode turns off flash, generally speaking. I also see that the photo was taken at 1600 ISO. That might have been at or near the maximum ISO for the camera or at least the maximum in Landscape Mode.

The odd reflections may have been bounce-back from the auto-focus assist light, if your camera has one.

Man, I hoped you could tell me.

It seems like only certain materials reflected the light in odd colors, mostly the synthetics of the life vests and the canoes...

This looks like Automatic White Balance from Mars.

I don't have the right computer to view the EXIF data, so I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate.

The photos were taken with a flash, and probably a fair amount of "auto" settings.

The synthetic fabrics have a safety/reflective quality to them that does not make them appear reflective in ordinary daylight, but does make them reflective if artificial light (searchlight, headlights, etc) is shown on it, at darker times of the day.

This reflection is bouncing back in to the camera and really screwing with the AWB -- tweaking it to a level that normally would not be used.

Without knowing more, that's the best I can come up with.

Now that I've had a chance to take a look at these on my big computer, here is what I think...

WhiteBalance : Auto
ExposureProgram : Landscape
ISO : 1600
MeteringMode : Multi-segment
Flash : Off, Did not fire

You selected Landscape Mode, as I mentioned before. That means the flash will not fire, even if it thinks it should.
ISO was either set to 1600 or the camera selected it (I suppose that is what happened).
The flash did not fire.
Exposure was set to multi-segment.
White Balance was set to auto.

The odd exposures, I think, are due to the day-glo safety gear, which is fooling your camera's built-in exposure and white balance. Do you have any wonky photos in which such gear is not present?

Reflective stuff looks different to the human eye than it might to a camera's sensors. It reflects light in the visible and invisible spectrum, and the results are not something that the typical digital camera is set up to deal with.

In the link above, the end-user had problems with their flash and reflective vests, but you don't need flash to confuse your exposure program. The reflective material sent more light back to your sensor than normal clothing does - which fooled the exposure program. It also had wonky colors - not usually seen - so it fooled the auto white balance.

That's my opinion. If you shot RAW, you might be able to tease something back out of these photos. I could not do anything with the JPG files, unfortunately.
