It a ‘yoroidoshi’ type of tantō. 鎧 yoroi means ‘armour’. 通し dōshi, from the verb tōsu: means ‘piercer’ or ‘to pass through’, so it’s an armour piercing tantō. When a samurai had his opponent in a clinch, grappling with him after pulling him from his horse, a yoroidoshi would been used to stab through his enemy’s armour and kill him. The thicker the blade, the more robust it would be for such a task. Some are very much thicker than this one.It looks solid and heavy, how much does it weigh? Looks a bit thick for filet knife, but looks like a tank for chopping limbs! I am very ignorant about these weapones. Closest I come is a fishing knife but that looks heavy for that.
Gorgeous!View attachment 33583I’ve acquired a couple of new tantō in my absence. The first is an elegant ‘shobuzukuri’ (iris leaf) style which has been designated as ‘worthy of preservation for future generations’ by the NHBTK.
