Yes trye, but then the range is different, so I used them both but for different situations, i dont see a situation where i choose one or the other.
I do it a hybrid way, like a hybrid of front kick and roundhouse, at a longer distance. I often step in and do it. But I am also extremely careful with it, i use it with precision only whne then elbow is away. quite nice for people with a long guard. Then that is perfect.
The normal roundhouse with shin I use at shorter distance, almost always as a follow up to a straight punch on the same side. This is more like a brute force follow-throw that goes 45 degress upwards to the lower ribs.
For most of the time i only kick with the shin or the heel.
