I have diagnosed myself (ahem) with allodynia. It’s much worse over my back and post-training sore muscles! Tattooing would be hell on earth for me and I’d rather save that for when ai actually arrive at the fiery pit of doom.

Tattoo on torso is quite painful. The pig that Marishiten rides is going on my lower right abdomen today. Possibly the mantra today on left ribs as well. Emla and lidocaine don’t really work for tattoo that lasts longer than an hour. I usually do 6-7 hour sessions. As far as the “lord” goes, he can give commands when he shows up in person. Why don’t u have an epidural?

Oh don’t get me started! There is a trend amongst the young rappers where they pay an anesthesiologist and 2 tattooists to knock them out and drill a whole back piece on in 6 hours. It’s blasphemous at best. No self respecting tattooist would participate in such a sham. My back piece was 100 hours of torture over a period of months. Part of the thing is earning the tattoo. Another irritating thing is what I refer to as “mittens and scarf” that’s where the youths get back of hand and neck tattooed but have nothing else. In the old days the tattooist would refuse these unless the rest of the body was heavily tattooed already. The idea with mittens and scarf being that it looks like they are covered while wearing a hoodie.

Tiger balm, like any other liniment, is great for relief of temporary strains and bruises. If you have chronic back issues this will not take it away completely. I usually buy the ultra strength tiger balm for post intense training sessions. I find it works better than icy hot or other liniments.

I pay but I’m doing a full body suit irezumi/Horimono so it’s much cheaper per long session because the Japanese style tattooist makes their reputation on suits and there aren’t that many wackos like me.

awhile back I was at a tattoo show and there was a woman with full back tattoo getting it removed (lazers?). as spectators walked by they could her and the process. I asked her how long it would take to get it removed? She said about 6 treatments. It looked quite faded as I was talking to her. I asked her if she regretted getting it she said No. She was getting another full back tattoo to replace it. Just different picture.

When I was getting my first tattoo (that would be 2006, afterwards my friend, who had come with me, and I went to see Ultraviolet, which had just come out, so the pain didn't stop), laser removal was starting to be accessible over here, so, to make conversation as I was getting inked, I asked my artist if he'd heard of the process.

He said that laser removal tool ten times as long and hurt ten times as much as getting the tattoo in the first place. I wonder if the tech got better in the intervening years.

Darker pigments are more effectively vapourised and hence removed, because they absorb the energy better than red pigments which still leave a red/pink ‘shadow’. It’s unlikely this method can be made less painful since energy/heat is energy/heat and this will stimulate nociceptors (pain receptors)

A few years ago, I heard, on BBC4 Radio, of a 14 year old boy who had made a very inexpensive topical cream that removed tattoo pigments! They didn’t explain the mechanism but said it cost about 3 quid a tub and his idea was being tested and developed by a private company (and no doubt having its price hugely elevated). I’ve heard nothing about this substance since…

Enough iodine will reduce a tattoo. But I don't recommend it. It is a Deep burn.
