A good historical perspective laid out in a BBC documentary (by Dan Snow) of how the seething conflict in Syria has been building for centuries:

How the invasion and subsequent collapse into civil war of a neighbor with close relations? How about the Wikileaks revelations that showed the people of Syria just how much Western powers owned their politicians? How about the massive amounts of arms being shuttled secretly into the country and given to radical groups with the intent of destabilizing the country? Sometimes the answer to these riddles isn't too hard to understand, but documentaries like this deliberately obfuscate it for political reasons.

It's like living next to a mountain that periodically has avalanches and having someone go up higher in elevation and plant some dynamite. When the next avalanche comes, the person says, "well that mountain always has avalanches."
