The recovering Xingyiquan addict

All weight is underside
Not many left here from the days of my xinyi addict posts and blog entries, but I have a problem. I have not been doing xingyiquan for some time now, not even thinking about it….much. Thought I had gotten over the addiction but now…. I am training a bit of Sun style taijiquan and it has something that Xingyiquan puts a lot of emphasis on….Santi Shi standing.

However Sun style just wants you to stand for 3 or 5 minutes where xingyiquan wanted you to stand for 20 minutes to an hour….well….I’m doing the 3 minutes standing for Sun…. But now I am once again getting that feeling, in then back of my head that I NEED to be doing Xingyiquan….and now I am thinking about it all the time..again….. I am thinking that Santi Shi is a gateway posture…..:)

Question is, will I give into the dark side……or….

Of course watching the documentary ā€˜Balance of the Five Elements’ last night probably didn’t help….

During my years here in China have been studying and learning and diggin deeper into various methods- Yiquan, Xingyiquan, Taijiquan and Tongbeiquan, putting various emphasis on them through the years but leaving non behind. For about 7years now i have focused as the very basic for my overall training on Santishi pole standing, a work that has proven very well fit with all other methods.
The length of time exercising in the Santi ZZ may vary, but with the correct method applied to it - time flies

I saw that on Prime (I think it was that), and was wondering if it was good.

Do you recommend it?

BTW: I like reading your posts about the "internal" arts. I have ZERO access to them and have always been drawn to them.

I enjoyed it, but then I also enjoyed the scenery in China. It does not get into a lot of depth, it is kind of an overview. But I thought it was good.

And thank you

In the early 2000s I talked with with 3 different people to get their thoughts on Santi Shi. My xingyiquan teacher said his teacher teacher (BP Chan) had said you are not even a beginner if you cannot stand in Santi Shi for 20 minutes per side. Also my xingyiquan teacher felt that all you needed to do to get to 20 minutes was stand 5 minutes right, 5 minutes left and repeat. He and I did not agree on this.

So I contacted Di Guoyong, who actually responded. His view was the repeating 5 minutes gave you nothing but 5 minutes (this was my view as well). However he felt that 20 minutes was the bear minimum, 30 minutes should be the goal, 60 minutes was better.

Zhang Yun , student of Wang Pei Sheng, also felt the 5 minutes switch only got you 5 minutes. But also added he would be thrilled if his students stood 20 to 30 minutes per side per day. But no one has that kind of time. When his shifu learned it was easy to have an hour or two a day to stand. He ended with 30 is better than 20, 20 is better than 15, and so on to 5 minutes.

Dennis Rovere, author of ā€˜The Xingyi Quan of the Chinese Army: Huang Bo Nien's Xingyi Fist and Weapon….’ Had a very interesting take, that I agree with. 20 minutes is a good goal, but people put to much emphasis on Santi Shi and forget that ultimately this structure has to move.

All were email conversations by the way

I’ve done long stance training in other systems — 20 minutes in horse stance isn’t unusual. In Tibetan White Crane, they’d time us with incense, leave, then come back and ā€œtestā€ our structure with impact.

I’ve also had Qigong teachers who required 30 minutes before they’d even teach you.

That was very different from what we did in Beijing. The focus there was on subtle, continuous alignment — more of a micro, active adjustment rather than holding a fixed posture.

My last Taiji teacher felt that if you could hold a posture much longer than about 5 minutes, the alignment probably wasn’t being maintained in the way he intended.

What I’ve found is that people who can hold stances for long periods often develop strong rooting, but it can become fixed and make it harder to ā€œemptyā€ and move dynamically.

In a push hands setting, they may not feel the need to move. In other settings, not moving — or being unable to move — may not work out very well.

It may be more related to what’s being trained — endurance in the posture, or continuous internal alignment. Not necessarily developing the same thing

Which one will give you better benefit?

1. Stand in 3-7 stance for 30 minutes.
2. Drill XingYi Pi Quan 1000 times nonstop for 45 minutes.

IMO, 1 < 2.

I have always believed in dynamic training is always better than static training.

- Running is better than walking.
- Walking is better than standing.
- Standing is better than sitting.
- Sitting is better than laying down.
- Laying down is better than to be dead.

From my understanding, Sun style is intersted in 3 to 5 minutes, at least that is in a book by Sun Jianyun. Xingyiquan likes it a bit longer. I will say, back when I was training Xingyi much more seriously after I got to 15 minutes I started feeling all sorts of connections. I got to 20 minutes per side and it was amazing how easy irt was to feel my foot movement (while in the posture) and get that to anywhere I wanted it to go. But then I was also training Yiquan postures at that time too. And I was divorced. no kids, and working second shift. and all I did all day was workout, do my XIngyiquan, Baguazhang, Taijiquan and standing practice.... then go to work.

Who gives you the right to not allowing other people to express different opinions?

I did not order you to do anything, no right was needed, I asked you nicely..to not start this in my thread since what you have brought to it, your opinion, does not apply. You do what you want, but don't expect me to give you a pass without comment

I first asked a question. I then just said, "I have always believed in ,..." Why did you attack me just by saying that?

How about this, don't care, not part of what I am discussing here. discuss what you like, but it is not on topic.

I want to know why you attack me on this thread. I'm going to keep asking until you provide me an answer.
I did not attack you in this thread, I asked you nicely not to post your usual "off topic" stuff in it.... and that was made clear a few posts ago. So please, stop trolling my thread

I didn't start "dynamic traing" idea in your thread. Windwalker099 mentioned it first. I just add more comment into it.

Still, there is no reason for you to attack me for this.

You do need to give me a clear reason for attacking me.
As I said, I did not attack you in this thread, therefore I can not give you a reason for something I did not do. I asked you nicely not to post your usual off topic posts in a thread that had nothing to do with what you wer contributing. Could you give me a clear reason why you interject things off topic and continue to troll my thread
