<somewhat serious comment>I never really got this when I read the LOTR as a kid but after studying WWII it seemed a bit too true to be comfortable:
Tolkien on if LOTR has been an allusion to WWII: "The Ring would have been seized and used against Sauron; he would not have been annihilated but enslaved, and Barad-dûr would not have been destroyed but occupied."</somewhat serious comment>
