In SD, if you decide to run, will it be better to take your opponent down first before you run?

PRO: You have more time to run.
CON: You have to deal with your opponent with minimum amount of contact.

Your thought?

I'm not a fast runner and currently I can't run at all. I would prefer to disengage after ensuring I won't be followed.

I probably won't use a circular punch.

So many variables in this. Here are a few that cross my mind:
  • How are my legs and back that day? If they are crap, running isn't much of an option.
  • How fit does the other guy look. On a good day, I can probably still out-distance most folks my age, and I know about where my stamina becomes a major problem.
If there's a good opportunity, I'd prefer to slow him down before depending upon my running speed and endurance. If there's not an easy opportunity, and I judge running is the better option, I'll be feeling for where my stamina starts to tail off. I want to turn and fight before that point - before I have to fight already out of energy. If I'm lucky, he isn't in as good of shape as I am, and when I turn around he's already very winded.

Maybe if I'm chasing I'll run, depends on why I'm chasing.

Other than that, nah, I ain't running. Might take a cab, though.

Yes, no, maybe, sometimes and it depends. Except when I don't. Or when I do.

As a SD instructor, what will you teach your students if they are secret service agent, policeman, bodyguard, ... that running away is not an option for them?

Of course all things are situational, but I’d say avoiding confrontation is the first step, second step walking/running away if possible, reasoning if no time to walk/run and exploding when necessary.
