one man's journey into old age, Karate and depression

The channel from the link you sent me (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwJwOmOzK8TBO3RfJC4LXOvzShe2ALNds) has quite a few videos. Some of them talk about the exercises her mom and dad and herself are doing twice a week. I have watched several and I plan to copy what they are doing.

I have come across several other web sites that appear to endorse light barbell weight for senior citizens. I am going to watch more and make comparisons between them.

Buying weights here and there instead of a whole set means I have 3 styles (for lack of better term) weights.

The easiest to handle are the ones with slots next to the edge. Next are the ones with a ridge along edge to grasp. And lastly the smooth ones.

with the small weights it doesn't make much difference but with 10# and up the slot and ridges make them easier to pick up and hang onto. Just a minor convenience but if I buy more I will spend more and avoid the smooth plates.

I think the ‘light barbell’ idea doesn’t work, because the stimulus you require to grow the type II you’re wanting for strength and mobility requires a heavier stimulus. You have to get to the point of failure (or within a couple reps of it) to do this and this should occur with a 6 to 10 rep set. With a light barbell you’ll end up doing 20+sets and fatigue will become a major factor reducing your reaching failure goal and making you miserable afterwards!

Follow ‘Rebuilding Mum and Dad’ since it’s tried, tested and documented. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but do check with your physician that you’re not doing to kill yourself or ‘split your kipper’ as they say in some parts of England!

When I said "light barbell weight for senior citizens." I was referring to what weights a senior citizen would be using as compared to weights beings used by a 30 or 40 year old person.

As I watch the videos the parents are using weights that push their heaviest weights possible. Pushing their limits.

Follow ‘Rebuilding Mum and Dad’ since it’s tried, tested and documented.
That is my plan. Thank you.

Hope Delayed.

Visited my Doctor today. He thought weight training was a good idea in general. But, with my lower spine issues not for me at this time. Maybe later. Bummer.

You could do exercises that don’t load your lower back; bench press, seated curls, leg extensions, but I’d strongly suggest you have an expert personal trainer to coach you in these methods as safely as possible.

Doing very little/no exercise is as dangerous as putting your head in a hungry, flaming, radioactive tiger’s mouth (Yanklezobblevob et al.,1997). Progressively walking up steep hills, stationary bike etc must be within your reach?

I think even some exercise is better than nothing. Of course, you want to stay within your limitations but keeping active is important. I hope you can build back up to maybe doing light weights over time.

I’d actually suggest going slightly beyond your seeming limitations otherwise your body won’t adapt and progress. Maybe use some wrist/ankle weights when you find the walking is too easy, walk up hills. You should be slightly muscularly uncomfortable toward the end of your exercise as this is the stimulus your body needs to improve.

I still think you should enquire with that gym on the Youtube video and see what they say about you training with then. The money would be well spent.

(repeat)

Well, I have an interesting development on the pain in my legs. A few weeks back I had to find a new doctor as the one I had moved to California. So I had to get lab tests and meet with her to set up. She changed a few of my meds. She said they were newer versions of drugs I was already taking.

At the same time my neighbor recommended his chiropractor to me. So I signed up for him. He diagnostician my problem and recommended adjustments. An I have been going once a week. and have noticed a significant reduction the level of pain I have in my legs. So I had to admit the chiropractor was actually happening. Contrary to my experience with several chiropractors earlier.

Well, I found out today that my new doctor had added two prescriptions for the pain in my legs! My daughter was there and said the doctor told me what she was doing it just did not register with me.

Now I don't know if the improvement was from the chiropractor or the MD's new meds? My fault entirely. LOL.

The key point is that your pain has eased, which is wonderful news and worth celebrating. Have you thought about whether your improvement might come from the manipulation and the medication working together?

Many people assume the body works like a clock: add a particular drug, supplement or therapy and the cogs move by a set amount, giving the same result every time. In reality, the body is a dynamic, complex, non-linear system. Everything interacts with everything else, and those interactions differ from person to person. That’s why a treatment can work well for one person at a certain dose, yet work less well, or not at all, for someone else. It’s also why doctors begin with the lowest dose and then ‘titrate’ it up or down until they reach the desired effect. It’s enormously complicated, and most people don’t appreciate that.

If you’d like to find out, you could pause your chiropractic adjustments for 2-4 weeks and see whether your pain changes. If it doesn’t, you can drop them for good and save yourself a lot of money!

This helps withe nerve numbness and tingling.
This helps with muscle loss
The truth is there is only so much you can do in the way of exercise, though it is essential to do it. The fact of the matter is once you reach 40 every 10 years you lose 10% of your muscle mass. And unless you’re willing to take steroids are human growth hormones you’ll never accomplish more than increasing your muscle mass by 10%. If you do the research, you’ll see this is true. Also, if you want, there’s good success with hormone replacement therapy the benefits outweigh the risk. JMTC

Went to Dr. today, every Thursday. He said he wants me to start walking everyday now. Even if it only a few houses length and back. Keep adding distance, even small amounts. Progress.

ordered bottle of this today

Soothamide - Vitalitus Palmitoylethanolamide

maybe it will help. I am getting tons of ad on internet for various meds. They all sound wonderful. But I am skeptical.

Tried tiger balm, Dit Da Jow and some others. only result, as far as I could tell was my wallet was lighter.

I now have to get wifes ok to order unless I can find a way to get it without her knowing. She watches for delivery trucks like a hawk.
