These guys were really drunk and stupid. The officers were giving them a way out and all they had to do was take it. Instead they act like idiots.

From a law enforcement perspective the office did an amazing of attempting to defuse a situation. When these idiots escalated it, the officer placed them into custody in a professional manner.

From a martial arts standpoint, what else could the cops done in separating the two individuals? It looks like they were fine in what they did. They ended the fight and there were no further injuries as far as we can see.

Arlington County PD is an excellent department, very well trained. Drunk In Public (DIP) is a problem solving charge in VA; nobody wants to tie themselves up for a DIP arrest unless it's going to eliminate a headache... especially on New Year's Eve, in one of the major bar/restaurant districts. Idiot had every chance to walk away; he'd have been fine if he'd even simply kept running his mouth, probably. Oh, well... at least they knew where they were when they woke up with a hangover on New Year's Day.

As to the Ferry... the fight was on. You don't defuse at that point, you stop it. And if you try to stop a fight "nicely" like you might a sparring match -- you get hurt.
