I'd be interested in the answer too. At the moment all I can tell you is that a friend had his 1st Dan KKW cert issued on the 5th of this month and his number is 5357206. It seems that non-Korean KKW certificates start with 5 (or 05) so that would make 357,206 KKW black belts outside Korea?

2.3 million in 1995 ref

4.2 million in 1998 ref

5.46 million in Apr 2003 ref

70 million in 2010 ref (the Kukkiwon refers to 1st Dan as masters but as this content isn't in the advert, I think they mean 70 million practitioners)

I know at 1 time KKW used to publish it on their website. Haven't seen that in a long time. Perhaps a quick email to the KKW requesting the info for a report may give you some official answers you could share with us here. With everything computerized, it should be a fairly simple task for KKW to provide a breakdown of each group. The only downsize is people who have passed away would still be counted as well as junior who got his 1st dan and quit. But still, the numbers become more realistic the higher the DAN. I would expect a TON of 1st dans, but a more realistic number of serious practitioners at or above 5th Dan...

I was told by G.M. Park that the last he knew it was around 750 and that was back two years ago.

I've got a copy of stats I pulled from the Kukkiwon back in 2001, which in part state the following:

1. There were a total of 1,649,592 Poom holders (1st Poom - 4th Poom) worldwide. Of those 1,589,517 where in Korea

2. There were a total of 2,951,778 Dan holders (1st-9th). 2,775,932 of those were in Korea.

3. There was a total of 216 9th Dans worldwide back then Of those 179 were in Korea.

4. There was a total of 38,140 4th dans worldwide. Of those 33,592 where in Korea.

5. Back then, the US (No. 2 in total poom and dan holders from leader Korea) had a total of 28,653 Kukkiwon 1st dans; 7,273 2nd Dans, 2,718 3rd Dans; 1052 4th Dan and 372 5th Dans. (I don't have data for other dans.

I believe those numbers are Poom and Dan holders combined

These numbers come from the Kukkiwon 25th anniversary book, published in 1997. If you want, I can look up the numbers for 6th-9th Dan back in 1997. It's not that many.

Here are the rest of the numbers for the US in 1997:

1st Dan: 28,653
2nd Dan: 7,273
3rd Dan: 2,718
4th Dan: 1052
5th Dan: 372
6th Dan: 109
7th Dan: 55
8th Dan: 21
9th Dan: 15
Total Dan: 40,268

1st Poom: 20,840
2nd Poom: 2177
3rd Poom: 206
Total Poom: 23,223

Total Poom and Dan: 63,491 (This number should be twenty or thirty times higher).

The book lists every single country. Anyone want to know any other countries?

If you received a KTA dan certificate prior to the creation of the Kukkiwon, then your number starts with 1 or 01. Also, if you received a poom certificate, you keep that same number even when you are old enough for dan rank.

Depends on how you defind blackbelt. If you define it as first dan or higher, then no, they wouldn't add up, as any student under fifteen receives pum grades and technically should be wearing the red/black belt, not a black belt.

Also, I suspect that in the KKW, four year old pum holders are very rare. Not enough people start their kids off at three to have enough four year old pum holders to really tip the numbers. If you're talking about eight to fourteen year olds, that might be a different story, but again, they would not be dan holders and technically, not black belt students.

as opposed to all the old farts who cant kick above the knee?? or have only kicked the bucket. I'm sure that adds to it as well...
Given that the vast majority of taekwondoin are probably under the age of twenty, I suspect that kids, teens and young adults make up the vast majority of Kukkiwon dan holders.

And I'm sure that most of those old taekwondoin can probably kick groin or solar plexus level. But you've gotta admit, the knee is a pretty nice target when dealing with practical application.

Very interesting. It seems like the KKW did not update their data base from 1997 to 2001. I got the numbers I listed from the Kukkiwon's then searchable database (status of dan holders) in 2001.
