Here is another government subsidized electric car that is having problems...

An electric vehicle manufacturer that received a $529 million loan from the Energy Department is recalling 239 vehicles.
The Transportation Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Thursday that the company, Fisker Automotive, will recall its Karma vehicles made between July 1, 2011, and Nov. 3, 2011, because of a faulty electric battery component that could cause a fire.
“Within the high-voltage battery, certain hose clamps may have been positioned incorrectly during assembly. If positioned incorrectly, the batter compartment cover could interfere with the hose clamps, potentially causing a coolant leak from the cooling hose,” NHTSA said in its recall notice Thursday.
“If coolant enters the battery compartment, an electrical short could occur possibly resulting in a fire.”

It's only a couple hundred because that is all they have sold. And it only cost the taxpayers 529 million dollars. What a deal.

This just isn't a big deal. This car may be a dud, but a 200 car recall so early in its sale is no indication one way or the other.

My own car was recalled twice so far.

It happens even to corporations that didn't take bailouts and make their cars in America in a non-union shop.

Lots of cars have minor recalls. I've had about 3 or 4 that I know of on my Saturn Outlook. (Biggies were taking out the heated windshield washer system after they had a few fires, and a current one on the headlight assembly.) Things happen, and the real world sometimes develops problems that weren't properly foreseen in development.

In this particular case, it looks like if it was a bad day on the assembly line, there could be problems with the position of some hose clamps. At a guess, the fix is two fold: reposition the clamps, and/or replace them with a design less likely to interfere. I'd put it pretty squarely on the "new design, **** happens" list.
