No problem on goals and even to get recognition. If the belt is the goal what happens when there are no more belts? In most (meaning not all) belt systems the Black Belt has become the ultimate goal. Even in those systems where it is acknowledged that the BB is only a milestone of having learned only the basics and you are now ready to really learn, the goal is the Black Belt and then people quit. What is the advantage of having motivated people to the belt? The belt comes from the individual being motivated to be a better martial artist. Had a discussion with a few students last week asking why don't we spend more time training only the material required for the next test. My answer was I'm teaching you a martial art for developing your body, mind, and spirit not for taking a particular test. I want you to strive to know yourself, to know your limitations, to set reasonable goals for personal growth & satisfaction, not for a certificate or a piece of colored cloth but it seems the belt is the goal for many.
