How much do you feel technique evaluations are subjective?

There is a difference between "throw" and "smash".

I have seen one full contact Karate fight that one guy got smashed his head straight down. He could not get off the stage for almost 20 minutes.
I agree. This is why I feel it is important to teach the person being thrown to tuck his chin and take the high back fall correctly. Teaching him to straighten his neck and look back to the floor, while trusting the other guy not to drop him, gives him the wrong training for when the other guy does it for real. Learning to take those falls for real, without spiking your head straight into the ground, is very important... especially in those throws. The best way to do that, is to throw for real. You can ramp up the intensity of the throw, from gentle to very hard, as he gets better at taking the fall. Its also good to have experience taking those falls in practice, before taking them in the fight or competition.
