I'm all of the sudden having this locking, pulling type pain in both my hips! It started about a week ago. It actually stops me from doing splits, or even low stances alltogether! I'll go down in horse stance and I get halfway and bam, it just locks up. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Its not like I'm trying to stretch too far, I've been lower for a long, long time, its just all of the sudden. It almost feels like the hip needs to be popped, but it is really heavy pain. Anyone got any suggestions, or has anyone experienced these type of "plateaus" before?

I've had problems in my hips before from over stretching. I went through a period were I heavily stretched every single day and actually lost flexibility and was having problems with pain in my hips. Took 2 weeks off stretching and everything went back to normal. Could you be stretching more or harder than usual lately?

That problem is kind of common with arts that stretch a lot.
I would rest it and see what happens. I had the same problem in my knee but found out it was due to crashing my motorcycle at 80 plus miles per hour. ;)

see your doctor. you need to find out what caused this problem and what kind of problem it is... if its a trauma injury (impact) it may need to be treated differently than if it is an overtraining or incorrect training issue. ask for a referral to a sports medicine specialist if necessary.

Nigthingale is right. Just to be on the safe side, see a doctor. I split a lot myself and at my age muscles, tentdons and joints can tighten up quickly. Over stretching happens to the best of us. Check the damage out with a qualified physician or medical technologist.

Knowing that there are many experianced MA's here I almost hate to post this for fear of insulting anyones intellegience- THAT IS NOT MY INTENT. Stretching problems can occur when stretches are used as warmups. Having been in MA and other physical activities for over 35 years I know that years ago warm ups meant stretches. But current exercise science stipulates stretching after you are warmed up- that is sweating generally your whole body. Unfortunately in many places, stretches are still used for warmups, and hence do cause injuruies, especially over stretching. Just wanted to help.

Peace

I think this may be the issue! I have been pushing myslef hard the last little bit, but nothing extreme! I guess I'm really getting old!! I'm turning 25 this next month and I'm going to stop there. Each year after I will celebrate my 25th birthday again!!

I appreciate you guys concern, I hardly ever go to a doctor because I'm a paramedic and my moms a nurse! My best friends dad is a MD and he usually writes me off if I go see him! I guess I should go, but it seems more like an extension issue than a tear or impact injury. Oh, and I truly agree about warm up and stretching, keep them seperate!!

You know it's funny, just after posting that I started to get hip pain a few days later because I had started stretching heavily every day again... time to take a small break!

Well, I guess I just need to lay off for a while. How exactly do you do that? I can't make myself not workout!! I guess I just need to lower my dose a bit for a while.

Heh, I don't actually stop training! OMG my legs need to be broken for that to happen! If I'm experiencing the hip pain I stop stretching the groin for a week or 2. If I have to kick in that time I just make sure I'm warmed up and try not to kick high enough to pull that muscle I didn't stretch. If I'm in real bad shape than I only practice hand techniques or grappling until I feel healed.
