The workers were on a cafeteria project at the school Friday when a gunman, identified by police as Brendan Liam OÂ’Rourke, opened fire, wounding two students. The workers chased after him as he stopped to reload, knocked him to the ground with a truck and held him until police arrived.
It’s not just that bullets were flying, a nightmare for anyone. It’s that kids were involved, Contreras said — kids like his. Deep down, it’s why he and two other construction workers-turned-heroes intervened at Kelly Elementary School in the first place.
