I have read somewhere and been told that whatever age you will be as of December 31 is he age you compete at during the entire year. i.e. if someone will be 14 on December 31, 2011 even if he does not turn 14 until November, he must compete as a 14 year old throughout 2011.

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed true? If so, is is a USAT or WTF rule and if so point me to the actual written rule somewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes that is true. For USAT events you compete at the age that you will be in that calendar year. Once you register as a member and enter you birthdate in the system and it is verified the system will automatically know your age for each year.

Thank you for confirming this. Can you point me towards someplace I can find this rule in writing?
You need to qualify for Nationals this includes Jr. and Sr. events. Each qualifier has the quailifying guidelines set. This also includes state championships. In the guidelines for each they all state that the age is as of the Dec. 31 of the event year.

I live in California and here is a link to the USAT state championships for CA. of 2011. On page 6 you will find what you are looking for. This pertains to your USAT membership that will cover all USAT events.
http://assets.usoc.org/assets/docum...name/39440/CA_STATE_CHAMPIONSHIP_2011_NEW.pdf

Each state qualifier and championships post the same guidelines. Just do a google search for you state event that qualifies for Nationals and read the guidelines. Search example: Taekwondo California State Championship Guidelines.

Hope this helps.

(Interpretation)

The age limit is based on the year, not on the date. For instance, if the Junior Taekwondo Championships are held on February 22, 2010, those contestants born on between January 1, 1993 and December 31, 1996 are eligible to participate.

I hope this answers your question. USAT just follows the WTF guidelines.

Ahh, knowing this comes down from the WTF, suddenly it makes more sense. I've been reading about this recently. In Korea, everyone is considered 1 year old when born (as they count the time spent in the womb as the first year). Then on January 1st everyone is considered one year older. So you could have a Korean born in November would be considered 2 years old in the January afterwards (whereas us Westerners would consider them just 2 months old).

So, apparently the WTF just considered that normal when considering ages and hasn't (yet) moved to the more international style of age being based on date (not just year) of birth.

IJF does this too. Something about not changing classes in the middle of the season I think.

It's an ATA rule, for sure. ATA's tournament season runs from June to June, so the age at midpoint was chosen for the entire year.
