The next thing I guess is I am forgetting an important point maybe many of the videos I have seen show you how to use it but I don'the think I have seen one yet with the kata in it since a kata is important I guess I will have to look for a video with one I mean my instructor is not teaching the tonfa at this time ) said the Katas are Important to you to learn how to use it better I will have to get to work looking for a kata video? It is my opinion I would rather have a whip or some kind of possibly pointy nightstick as it seems excessive to me to use any thing bladed as It seems there is hopefuly a way to defend our self that if used against you is not necessarily bad I mean bladed weapons remove limbs and if you have a firearm used against you you will have trouble ps the best thing for a knife fight is another knife? I disagree I would rather hope that I had a tonfa and could effectively use it as I said before don't want to be responsible for removing limbs or something seemes excessive to me. I will say I have a pair of wooden tonfas in my closet I don't carry it in public but as I said before like that martial arts movie I saw they seemed to have bows and arrows and other weapons and when the guy pulls out a gun on the train the martial arts instructor seems to say '' no guns '' and it seems to be thrown out the window. I mean in every class it does seemail they want you to practice the kata first before moving to the self defense moves? So as I said I guess I had better start looking for a kata video? Ps any thoughts on adding one or 2 side handles to a 3 foot riot baton?
I had to read that a couple times, and I think I understood it. I have a couple reactions to it.
The first is that there are a ton of different kata for weapons, some are helpful and some aren't. The better option IMO would be to find an instructor that does teach tonfa (or if your instructor does and just isn't at the moment, ask him), and actually practice with it against another person.
Depending on the situation, there are a couple of things I would want in a knife fight. One is a gun. Another is a rapier. One is a pair of running shoes. Depending on the situation, I would also want a knife. It also is going to be a lot tougher to remove limbs than I think you're imagining it.
What martial arts movie are you talking about? As a general rule of thumb, don't look towards a martial arts movie for MA advice...their concern is what looks best, not what's realistic or effective. And don't think that someone saying "no guns" will cause someone to throw away their gun...unless the person giving the order is a police officer, and the person being told "no guns" is facing arrest and knows that he's in trouble.
Some schools will want you to learn kata first. Some won't. There are arguments about which is better, with no real consensus. Do you mean every class you've seen on youtube, every class in general, or just every class that you've been in?
