[h=2]Bill Clinton's words could haunt Obama today[/h]Richard Wolf USA TODAY EXCERPT:
President Obama's campaign speech on the economy today will be delivered in the same spot where Bill Clinton delivered a 2010 campaign speech Obama might just as soon forget. In September 2010, Clinton told his Cuyahoga Community College audience in Cleveland that Democrats deserved two more years to fix the nation's economy.
"The Democrats are saying something like this: 'We found a big hole that we did not dig. We didn't get it filled in 21 months, but at least we quit digging,'" Clinton said at the time. "'Give us two more years. If it doesn't work, vote us out.'"

Republicans claim two more years didn't help. As evidence, they cite an unemployment rate still hovering above 8%, slow job growth and an exodus of people leaving the workforce.
Democrats, led by Obama, cite more than 3 million jobs added to the labor force in 20 consecutive months of job growth since Clinton's speech. Until then, the country had lost more than 3.5 million jobs in the 19 months of Obama's presidency
END EXCERPT
"The Democrats are saying something like this: 'We found a big hole that we did not dig. We didn't get it filled in 21 months, but at least we quit digging,'"
Clinton said at the time.
"'Give us two more years. If it doesn't work, vote us out.'
"
I fully agree with Bill Clinton.

I can only tell you that changing horses will add to the problem rather than do anything to solve it. Plus, even if the political colour of your government changes, they will still be executing the policy of the previous incumbents for the majority of their first term.

The political system is still mostly alright but the players within it have become corrupted. So unless you get rid of the whole lot, from party root to the tip of the party tree, you'll be stuck with a corporate-lead policy making machine. That machine does not have the interests of the people as it's priority.

The electorate is so uneducated down right stupid voting against its own self interest at this time willing to be swayed by enormous unlimited advertising funding from anonymous super packs that it would seem the only hope is to have a total swing to the right so they can do so much damage people will hurt enough to put an end to all the corporate domination and coruption. Many of us are so frustrated with Obama's total betrayal of what he was sent there with a majority mandate to fix things that he infact took money from the same sources comprimised on every level and done nothing but whine about the bad Republicans not letting him do anything.

Well today he just did something to gain favor with latino voters amnisty for ilegal's if they have attended school and such where was his leadership on jobs and the housing fraud rip off by banks and Wallstreet? If he wins with a narrow lead it will be 4 more years of fighting and do nothing? There is a growing number ready to dump him out of revenge for not doing his job and revenge on the democratic and even republican senior and middle class being stupid enough to want Romney clearly a corporate raider as far removed from the average person's plight as the French revolution people starving with out bread well let them eat cake?

Romney's comment let all the house go to the rich who will fix them up and rent them? yes lets go back to Potter's Field lets return to the 1900 when people had to die and fight for basic protections again against the Robber Baron's. Our electorate is so stupid they have an attention span of 24 hour or less all Romney has to do is say something different say nothing refuse to answer or deny saying it but just continue to say Me Good Obama Bad.

2010 say a back lash of Rightism electing extreme right polittions if Democrats Moderates Independants and moderate senior citizens cannot get thier act together enough to make a change in the Congress, Senate and re elect Obama with a message and mandate they deserve what Romney and the corporations do to them.

Here's something else to think about. Obama has tried to get a jobs bill passed, but it cannot get through congress because the House is controlled by Republicans and the Senate must have a super majority to pass anything, given the Republicans penchant to threaten filibuster on everything. Basically the bill gives money to the state allowing the hiring of more firefighters, police, and teachers, and also money for repair of infrastructure. Of course the Republican battle cry has been "smaller government! No new spending!" so they will not allow it to progress.

The problem is that during recession, according to econmist and history, the government needs to do what it can to stimulate the economy through hiring and public works, even through defecit spending. Roosevelt did it in the Great Depression to start the upward climb out of that. Now I know Republicans think that he was a socialist, so maybe he isn't a good example. How about Reagan, Bush, and Bush? All three Republican presidents had job stimulus bills passed when faced with thier own recessions. To thier credit it seemed to help the economy, though obviously in the 2nd Bush's term it did fall badly toward the end of his term.. Now, even though it goes against history and economist advice, the Republicans in congress block passage of the same type of bill. It is starting to look like politics are being playing with the health of our economy.

Now I know some people are not big on defecit spending. I can understand that. Its hard to understand how defecit spending could be anything but bad. However, IF that defecit spending helps the economy then in the long run it will be a net gain. Much better than defecit spending on tax breaks and incentives for corporations, which despite record profits as a whole have decided to squirrel away thier money, further stagnating the economy and job growth. Also better than large defecit spending for defense contracts now that we are winding down our 2 wars, which do little for our economy as a whole. Also better than defecit spending for tax breaks on rich Americans, which historically has proven to do little to nothing for economic growth.

A little education goes a long ways to understanding how the economy works. If this election is going to be based upon the economy, which it looks like it will be, the smart person would educate themsleves instead of believing a lot of the nonsense being put out there that has little basis in fact. That way you know what the different policies are about and thier probable effect on the economy, instead of just voting for the guy wearing your team's colors.

Except for the inconvenient little fact that the Democrats ran ALL of congress for the first two years of his presidency and he still couldn't get a jobs bill passed...

And ran Congress for the 2 years before his presidency when they held the shovels digging the hole.

Once again, not accurate. Obama and congress DID pass a stimulus/jobs bill his first year. It was not as big as most economist reccomended in a nod to conservatives and thier concerns, but according to most nonpartisian sources it kept the US from falling into a full fledged depression. The thinking was that if the economy needed more, congress would pass another bill later down the road. However, now it seems as if many politicians are more concerned with other things than doing what is neccesary to help the economy and those suffering in it.

Mind you, the Democrats would be sensible to throw the next election so they don't get hit with the ill feeling for the economic pain that is coming.

As an aside, I haven't kept up with the current economic flows around the globe but does anyone here know what percentage of her trade is it that America does with Europe?

I don't know the percentage, but most of the US's trading is done with western European countries. That is why some people are so freaked out by western European's current economic woes. Asia may catch up soon though, with the emerging and growing markets in china. Though I wonder if China can keep up her growth.

Aye, that was what I was nodding towards, Lun . The situation in Europe is a lot more dangerous than the politicos are letting on. Greece, Spain and Italy are in a world of hurt right now and there is high speculation that they will either leave the Euro (and go back to their native currencies) or will be constrained from doing so at great cost to their people.

We could be in for some rough years, no matter who is in congress or the presidency. If growth in China slows substatially, our trade with Europe slows due to thier economic woes, and our own internal trading stays stagnated due to politics, it will be a long, bad, drought for the poor and middle class in America. We'll be getting it from all sides, with no base in the economy to keep it from falling terribly.
