Does there exist a list of knife fighting systems out there or arts that include knight fighting as a critical (and practical) component?

I want to have a little catalog of knife fighting systems. If people would not mind sounding off on their system(s) of fighting that would be great.

Some that I have...

Contemporary
Mike Pick Tactical Knife Fighting
American Kenpo Karate Knife Fighting
Israeli Tactical Knife Fighting (Haganah)
Hock Hochheim's CQC Combatives
Fairbairn
Defendo
Krav Maga Knife Fighting
Cold Steel Knife Fighting System
Systema Knife Fighting

North American
Choctaw Knife Fighting

Filipino, Malaysian, Indonesian
Sayoc Kali
Kalis Ilustrisimo
Malaysian Silat Lincah

Japanese Koryu
Araki-ryu
Asayama Ichiden-ryu
Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryu
Kashima Shinryu
Kashima Shinto-ryu
Kurama-ryu
founded Tensho (1573-1593)
Maniwa Nen-ryu
Sekiguchi Shinshin-ryu
Shingyoto-ryu
Suio-ryu
Tatsumi-ryu
Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu
Yagyu Shingan-ryu
Yagyu Shinkage-ryu

There are a tone more pilipino and malay peninsualar arts with heavy knife conponents.

I have systemized my own knife program within the Tulisan Eskrima Gild (link below). I have one program for civilians and another for operators.

:)

Dwight McClemore has a big knife/bowie knife system.

Does Krav Maga have a knife fighting system? From all I have seen KM is more empty hand vs. the knife defense rather than a knife fighting system. Any referneces on this?

Thanks
Mark

My recommendations (and reasons) in order... no offense to other systems not mentioned. These are just my top 3 based on what I've seen.

1. PTK for combat reality. (Not for the faint of heart)

2. CSSD/Modular Knife for simplicity and adaptability.

3. Comtech drawpoint for simplicity and practcality.

Do you mind me asking where you got these schools as ones that have Knife fighting? All of them have sword, but I have seen a few of them and I am not sure they use anything shorter than a wakazashi short sword.

And one school I know has how to use a tanto in it is not listed- the Takeuchi ryu.

Hello Bzarrnett,

Other systems you may want to examine:

Atienza Kali
AMOK!
Floro FIghting Systems
Dekiti tirsia sirdas
Pekiti Tirsia kali
Pananadata
ComTech (James Keating)
Modern Arnis
Inosanto/Lacosta blend
Doce Pares Escrima
Serak (deThouars)
Silat Mubai

This is just a few off the top of my head, many, many more out there. Try them all!

Gumagalang
Guro Steve L.

Mr. Picks Kenpo knife system is definitely some serious stuff. It's pretty much the same thing he teaches the Army Special Forces. The only difference being that the SF stuff immediately goes straight to the kill.

If you are looking for “The Best”, than look no further than Hock Hochheim!

Go check out GT Leo Gaje... your opinion will change.

I had the chance to attend a seminar with Gaje, and his knife work was unbelieveable!! The Filipinos IMO have the best knife work around.

No, I’ll stick with Hock. Gaje’s amazing, but he’s a magician. Have you ever seen his circus-handcuffing act that he presents to LEO? It’s amazing, but no one can do it but him. He should be in Jet Li’s next movie.

Peace

Well, I look at it like this. Everyone is going to have their own opinions of what they like/dislike. There is alot of the menu to choose from. That being said, and I'm speaking for myself here, I'm not going to limit myself to one thing.

Mike

Hey Joe

I agree that Hock has a real good knife system that is organized and taught or learned pretty easily. Although it doesn't have the flash or sophistacation that some of the FMAs have. But then it wasn't meant to have those techniques.

Mark

Hi Mike

Fancy bumping into you here! Sure, train with as many as possible. Believe me I have and still do. I know what the Gaje system is all about and it’s just not for me. He is (and I stand by that) a genius at what he does!

Peace

Joe

P.S. Check out Hock’s forum : www.hockscombatforum.com you’re welcome even if we don’t always see eye to eye.
