Another Tasing

Don't tase me, sis! ...sorry.

As for the incident, if the woman was indeed retreating, then it seems like force was not required. They could have continued talking at that point. From my limited understanding, force is supposed to be used to neutralize a physical threat, not to end recalcitrance or verbal abuse.

Still pretty stupid on the tased woman's part though.

I think it would help to know what the procedures for this dept. are, but considering we don't know them, we can only go on the story. In any case, I can only assume the taser was used because she was flailing her arms, even though she was not moving towards the officer.

Some other interesting bits.

According to an American Civil Liberties Union representative in Orlando, yelling at a police officer and even cussing one out is constitutionally protected speech. And both the ACLU and Amnesty International USA say this incident likely could have been handled differently, adding that Taser use has become too casual and too common among police officers.

While this may be the case, its certainly not the best way to come across to a LEO or to get the situation solved. No matter how upset one may be, there is no need to act like a fool.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood said if a Taser had not been available, his officer likely would have used other weapons to subdue Beeland.

I'm sure a fuss would have been made if the officer used pepper spray or a baton.

As usual with stories like this, it seems to me that the situation could have been resolved in a calm fashion if the accused did not act like an ***. This sounds like a simple misunderstanding between the accused and the clerk. Once the cop got there, if she (the suspect) had acted calmly, this thing would have been over in a short time.

It still comes down to: Don't argue with LEO's, Do what you are told, Shut up. These three things, which, are really simple will, in the vast majority of situations keep you from being tased, smacked with a baton, shot or subjected to other methods of attitude adjustment.
Having a few friends who are LEO's and having watched a bunch of Taser videos on Youtube, I would much rather be tased than beaten with a baton. Having had the basic training experience with tear gas, I would prefer a tasing to mace, CS, or pepper spray. Then again, as I am a law abiding person who doesn't pick fights with or otherwise antagonize authority figures, I don't have much to worry about. Some of my friends however...

I'm not comfortable trying to guess from the little information in the article about the appropriateness of the use of the Taser.

However, many agencies have actually placed the Taser either equal to or below many empty hand techniques; it's actually LESS LIKELY to injure either the officer or suspect as seriously. Most of the people in this forum have struck and been struck; most of us know that there's no way to enter into range to strike or control someone without being exposed to the possibility of being struck themselves. And most here know that people are, as a rule, tougher than TV portrays them. They don't go down easily, unless you're Chuck Norris. Which means that, to control them, you stand a very good chance of injuring them. I'm very confident when I say that it's is all but impossible to resist a good hit with the Taser; you WILL go down, you WILL NOT resist during those 5 seconds. At the end of the 5 seconds, you'll be able to pop up and continue, with almost no residual problems. You can't say that about being hit...

I tell you what...

There are 2 versions of this story... one says she was flailing at the cop... Ya know what? You get tasered. Its your own damn fault.

Another says she was backing away with her hands up and only being verbaly abusive. Not, IMO an excuse to taser anyone.
