Carry a broom with you. If you have Bo Staff skills this broom could defend you from a wild dog while keeping some distance.

If you pair the umbrella with a nice tweed suit and a derby, you will always look dashing while you're waiting for that rabid dog. Or rain.

That's important, because since only 60-70 dogs in the US contract rabies in any given year, you really need a better reason than rabid dogs to be carrying an umbrella. Unless it's a Kermit umbrella. Those are funny enough to carry any time...

Ah. Umbrella and derby. "Dashing" you say. Brings back memories of watching the "The Avengers" in the 60's.
