I suspect that the media is being played. #sandylootcrew is being used by rascals who want to have a laugh at the media's expense.

As to actual looting, I'm sure there is some of it going on, but I also suspect that there are some folks who are coming to the realization that they don't have flood insurance and therefore are not going to be getting a check from their insurance company, and who have gotten the notion that if they are burglarized, then *that* is covered and will help them pay some of the cost of fixing their homes, furniture, etc.

Most loathsome, perhaps, were reports of people posing as FEMA and utility workers to gain entry into homes, then sticking up residents.

I think looting is in some way a natural occurrence amongst humans.
I think shooting looters is as as well.

Oh, I have no doubt it's happening. But I also think it's pretty isolated and relatively rare. This is about the most orderly natural disaster I've seen in some time.
