Hello, Last night working with the kids class..we wanted to teach them something they can use to end a attack quickly and without breaking there fist and not creating great harm to there attacker. (idea is to smash the nose).

We had them holding there hands in front and striking/pushing there palms into the face of the attacker. Like two machine guns firing, (left then right, left and right..one after the other. (moving forward each time).

the option: is striking under the chin... pushing up. (can cause great harm to the attacker).

The kids really like this and found it easy to do. Just wanted to share this....Aloha

Sounds like they had a good time. Certainly nothing wrong with doing anything simple. You're right...you'll run less chance of injury, and it may look better on your part, in the eyes of a witness, if you're using an open hand rather than a closed fist.

I couldn't agree more..Open hand strikes to the side of the face are very effective no matter what size the officers hand is..

Remember, when teaching someone the Martial Arts and/or self-defense principles/techniques, an Instructor has an obligation to educate each student on what's called and termed in the legal field as escalation of force. We all have the legal right to defend ourselves, and also we all should be morally obligated to also help and defend our loved ones and those in need when situations presents such but unfortunately the liberal laws sometimes come back to protect the scum and find guilt in the protectors. That's why an instructor must teach those the legal laws of escalation of force, how much is needed to overcome whatever situation is presented. Teaching students various ways to deal with situations is much needed. If a kid is only taught to strike/hit another kid which might lead to injury instead of applying other techniques which could diffuse the situation without causing injury, is something instructors to be doing. This topic could go on and on but ponder what I am saying.

I agree. This is an area that is very important, yet often overlooked. If the instructors themselves do not have any idea as to what the legal aspect is, it may be a good idea to contact someone such as a lawyer or LEO. Perhaps setting up a time when they could either speak to the inst or the students at the school, explaining these areas would be a good idea.

Hello, Good point about teaching the rights and laws in our states.
We always tell the kids to walk/run away and let your teacher, parents know, about the trouble maker, DO NOT GET INTO A FIGHT!!!!

Our instructor tells each child if you get into a fight because it was your fault....I will not teach you anymore and you must quit. So far in the last 10 years...no student was ever ask to quit. (there may have being two incidents). .......................Aloha

Nice technique. You can also use the same opening strike to the chin to control the head and knock an opponent down -- providing a child the window to run for safety.

In our program, we teach children that their goal is always escape, so techniques that end with a knockdown are preferable. You can run a long way in the time it takes somebody to stand up.
