Many Big Grizzly bear have been taken with a hand gun, 44mag, 454, 500's. In fact they have a Hand Gun season. Now if a novice could shoot the big bore pistols to save his life that's another question. But to say a hand gun will not drop a grizzly is not true...

We have bears living on our property, just brown bears. They will avoid us at all costs, so we leave them in peace. The only time we bother packing is in fall and then we take the rifle with slugs or the .40 and put bells on. The .40 might not drop him or her but will buy us some time to run or get in a few more shots. The soft slugs will wreck the bear, something we'd rather avoid.
As for the bears high north like Alaska or anywhere in the Arctic if you'd like to go hunting with your Desert Eagle or Glock .50 more power to you. Another Darwin award winner. (Hint: The RC (mounties) go out in pairs carrying their own shotguns loaded with slugs to deal with bear problems.) The bears up there are not scared of you, to them you are juicy yummy Food. In our small town up north we would get Bear Warnings. If an aggressive bear came into town someone would be sent around to warn all the shops to keep patrons inside till the bear was delt with by the RC's. The sled dogs were kept in a huge compound not to keep the dogs in but to keep the bears (and wolves) from snacking. It was interesting.
