Older Martial Artists

For what it's worth I am 79 and staring at 80; I don't particularly like it but it is what it is. I've had major surgery on both shoulders, a right knee replacement and two or three broken bones. I have psoriatic arthritis and spent a week in the hospital last year with pericarditis caused by the disease. I'm immune compromised and mildly anemic with attendant chronic pain and chronic fatigue. And lest we forget the osteopenia and annual reclast shots it should be mentioned I have to take too many prescription drugs.

My rheumatologist tells me I have arthritis in every joint in my body....Yippee! Then there is the endemic spinal disease. To a great extent I overcame much of this by becoming quite flexible. I fall a lot, and I mean a LOT, but never had an injury due to my muscle memory ability to fall correctly. Only one exception when I passed out (unconscious) during a walk around the block falling on my face, arms & legs splayed out, that sent me to the ER. There were other incidents which I'll omit but you get the idea.

The knee replacement was this summer so I am not released to go back to my exercise routine as yet. But in a few months I'll get back to it. Mostly my workouts are for fitness. I do incorporate some weapons work and a modest amount of martial arts. My balance is so bad I have to take extreme care to avoid falls. This wasn't so much of a problem until my early 60s.

I never really thought of myself as getting old but when one starts losing childhood friends it's harder to deny. And that's the worst part. But the fact that I'm still here on September, 10th, 2025 is a wonderful gift.

There's actually a John Steinbeck short story about a demonic pig, who was eventually exorcised by a local priest and became, I think, a saint

Read a book titled “Lamb” by Christopher Moore. A very humorous and slightly irreverent story of Jesus’s early days.

I think it is one of the funniest books I’ve read.
I really enjoy all of Moore's books. For those who aren't familiar with his work, they all take place in the same satirical fantasy universe, but are with a few exceptions stand-alone stories which can be enjoyed individually.

His work reminds me of Carl Hiaasen. Sick Puppy is a favorite Hiaasen title of mine. I’m also a big fan of Joel Chandler Harris works written in dialect.

Me thinks it is possible that this threwad has strayed far grom original topic. Just my opinion, other may differ.

After teaching dynamic kicks; outward scissor kick, jump double front kick, flying side kick/back pivot combo, flying back pivot, etc., My back is reminding me I'm in my mid 40's. The key is keeping someone young enough on the floor to teach and demonstrate those techniques. Unfortunately, those students are pulled from class due to work these days. I'm grateful I can still pull them off, but it's definitely not as easy as it use to be!

I tend to work myself until I break. Had hernia surgery in August and decided to compete in a point sparring tournament in September. I did powerlifting until my shoulder stopped working, had to take off about six months, and then I did a month of PT and got right back in. Had an excellent PT guy for that. I told him to break me. Even though things don't work they way they used to I'd have to say the worst I've felt is when I'm not doing something.
