Mona Lisa's true emotions

I thought this was kind of interesting....a new way to solve an age old question

from Slashdot:

"The BBC reports that researchers at UIUC and the University of Amsterdam, Holland have used "emotion recognition" software to determine Mona Lisa's true emotions. The algorithm is based on a library of neutral face images of young women and determined that Mona Lisa was 83% happy and 9% disgusted." From the article: "The program, developed with researchers at the University of Illinois, US, draws on a database of young female faces to derive an average 'neutral' expression. The software uses this average expression as the standard for comparisons. The New Scientist says that software capable of recognising emotions just by looking at photographs could lead to PCs that adjust their response depending on the user's mood. "

83% happy and 9% disgusted? What's the other 8% of her emotions?

... Guess we'll never fully understand women.

Nope, never will.
But her "smile" has been one of the great art enigmas of all time. I find it surprising that a computer has been used to analyze it. A cold, unfeeling, calculating machine to solve that mystery? ... what will they think of next?
Regardless, the painting itself bears long looks of study as it's brilliantly done. Tones, color usage, the subtle use of expression. Remarkable . Wish I could get that good someday.

"It concluded that the subject was 83% happy, 9% disgusted, 6% fearful and 2% angry, New Scientist magazine was told."

Oh. well, there ya go then. ... Somehow I bet a painting of a male would have been much easier to figure out. Hungry, tired, mad, stupified, or horny would have pretty much covered it. ... Actually, the last one trumps all the rest, negating the need for advanced computer technology.

p.s. - Happy birthday again! Shouldn't you be out somewhere having fun?

Most women I encounter are just disgusted --- hey, wait, maybe it's me.

But who can say that facial expressions for that time period carried the same meaning as today.

So she was happily disgusted while trying to fearfully hide her anger?

Considering at least one story that she was supposedly painted while nude...could explain the mixture of emotions like that.

Of curse, if she was live today she wold probably just say "well, if you don't know what I'm feeling then I'm not telling you!"

I felt that way the last time I broke my diet on a greasy double cheeseburger. In fact, I feel that way about a lot of things these days hehe.

I always thought she was smirking because we don't realize she's really a man.
Well, I always heard that the Mona Lisa was actually a self-portrait of Leonardo DaVinci. ;) :D

(Seriously)

83%= I love it that you are painting me!
9 % = Why is it taking so long???
6% = I'm going to miss the sale at Macy's!!!
2% = You can make your own dinner tonight!
