Do you think the people not chewing gum were told to have an unhappy, sad facial expression? That's how it came across to me, and that could have been an influence?

Honestly... I don't think the gum chewing made a difference in some of the examples slightly more than others some less depending on the situation

I like chewing gum except it tastes good (not the spicy kind and preferably not the minty kind)
I always bring a lot of gum to karate camp and sitting at the bonfire usually at night time probably sitting on a bench (nice time to get gum)
