Just a quick question to all. It seems that students that come from other schools to train here have less knowlege about kicking than our students at the same rank. Even if they came from other tkd schools. Maybe I'm tryin to give them advanced kicks too soon. They seem to be doin good though. Here's our system.

White- Front kick, side kick, back kick, round kick.

Yellow- inside and outside crescent, axe, shuffle axe, hook, sp. back.

Orange- sp. hook, sp. crescent

Green- Jump side, jump sp. crescent, jump sp. back

blue.- Jump sp. inside crescent, jump sp. hook.

Brown- flying side, 360 back

Brown/Red- tornado

Red- 360 crescent

Red/Black- 360 hook

what's yours?

First week: Teep kick, round kick.

Second week: Side kick, spinning heel kick.

I don't have to worry much about advanced kicks, lol. :D

My thoughts:
Any "Advanced" tech is based on an "intermediate" tech, which is based on a much more embryonic "fundamental" or "Basic" tech....etc.
So....I don't think a person should learn an advanced tech until they've shown a true understanding and ability with the intermediate tech it's based on.
I don't think that a person should learn an intermediate tech until they've shown a true understanding and ability with the basic tech it's based on...
AND:
I don't think a student should learn a basic tech until they
show me the money!!
hahaha....

Your Brother (who only knows "Basic" humor...)

Where I learned TKD, the kicks we learned were not tied to a particular rank. In our basics, we required front kick (the snapping kind), sidekick, and roundhouse. But, at the instructor's discretion, we would practice all variety of different kicks and kicking combinations, from white belt on up. Of course, you weren't expected to be any good at using advanced techniques until you reached the higher belt ranks.

I think it all depends upon rather or not your training for sport or self defence.

if we were only training for self-defense, I don't think a 360 jump spinning hook would fall into the curriculum. But I spose that's a different thread.

Showing me the money sounds right on the money. I wish that we could take each student individually through their training and advance them through their kicks, forms, self-defenses etc based only on their skill level, ie. no preset testing dates. but that's a different thread as well. huh?

Yes, it is a different thread topic. I assumed this was a curriculum based question, not an application question.
