After a 30 year hiatus my other half has thrown herself back into Shotokan Karate! I don’t know who’s more excited, me or her. She represented her country in various Asian championships when her University studies were interrupted for three years by a ridiculous military coup and she was a regular champion in the kata division.
I’m really keen to coach her ‘peripherally’ but have do restrain myself from interfering too much. I’ve suggested stretching, using a wobble board and generally relaxing in her practise to enhance overall fluidity, but otherwise I just encourage her. I’ve also bought her a couple of books that I think she’ll find enthusing: ‘The Best of Dave Lowry: Karate Way Columns 1995 to 2005’ and ‘The Karate Way: Discovering the Spirit of Practice’ again by Dave Lowry ; I like his controversial presentation of very good ideas.
Christmas presents are really easy this year: a silk Tokaido blackbelt for when she’s permitted to wear one again, and a good heavyweight, canvas Karategi. She seems to favour lighter dogi but we all know the heavier the better!
