Gracie Jiu Jitsu Vs Other Arts

It was Paul Vunak who said that somebody with twenty years in another art could be beaten by somebody with one year in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I suppose that's possible, but it's also possible for somebody with twenty years in Gracie Jiu Jitsu to be beaten by somebody with one year in another art.

My only response in this thread
There is always someone, bigger, stronger, younger, faster, luckier, more skilled or better trained...... so...yup, could happen to anyone in any style

It's also possible for someone with 20 years of experience in (insert name of any martial art here) to be beaten by someone with no training in any martial art at all. There are a lot of factors that go into the outcome of any fight and martial arts training is just one of many.

In any case, that's a really old quote from Vunak, used as part of an advertisement. There's generally a certain amount of puffery which goes into advertising.

Chuck Norris was defeated by a younger, less skilled fighter back in his compititon days because he talk to the kid prior to the match because the kid was so nervous. Ultimately Chuck felt bad for him and well, ended up losing.

Add "more sober" to the list.

A lot of this is going to depend on "beat in what"? A BJJ guy is not likely to fair well in a TKD competition, and a TKD guy is not likely to fair well in a BJJ competition. There's an old saying that goes something like, "Don't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree."

Some arts might fair better in one competition than the inverse. For example, a Muay Thai fighter I think will have an easier time in a TKD competition than a TKD fighter in a Muay Thai competition. But if you start talking about taking a full-contact MT guy and a competitive TKD guy and put them into a point sparring Muay Thai competition (like MDL), then they'll be a lot more even.
