Envelopes Next to Threads?

Sometimes the envelopes next to the thread titles are orange, some are gray. I realize when the lock symbol is on the envelope that it means an admin closed the thread, but what is the difference in color all about?

Grey is a topic that hasn't gotten many views yet.

Red is one that's fairly popular for reading.
