Does anyone have any recommendations for must have books (or authors) depicting Chinese Martial Arts history, philosophy etc.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.
:)

authors, Robert Smith, Don F Draeger

"Chinese Boxing: masters and methods" by Robert Smith

I agree with CLFSean,

Especially Adam Hsu! He has a nice series of essays on Chinese Martial Arts.

The Wong Han Fun series was good for a basic insight into Northern Mantis however only drawback is these are forms only books, so it truly benefits the practitioners of Northern Mantis. But these are inexpensive renditions so maybe worth a look over.

I enjoyed Moy Yats book titled Ving Tsun Trilogy, again a mostly forms book but gives clear photo's on the 3 hand sets of Wing Chun.

Ill list some more later with links: (at work right now)

Some have already been listed

-The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu by Lao Tzu

-Art of War Sun Tzu

-Mastering Yang Style Taijiquan by Fu Zhongwen

-The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan by Yang Chengfu

-Sword Polisher's Record Adam Hsu

-The Making of a Butterfly by Phillip Starr

-Di Guoyong on Xingyiquan Vol.1: Five Element Foundation

-Li Tianji's The Skill of Xingyiquan

-The Root of Chinese Qigong: Secrets of Health, Longevity, & Enlightenment by Yang Jwing-Ming

-Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts (Bushido--The Way of the Warrior) by Donn F. Draeger, Robert W. Smith (the section on Chinese martial arts)

Not Chinese martial arts but applicable to CMA

-Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams

Thank-you for all your recommendations, greatly appreciated.

If I may make a recommendation of a translation:

http://taoism.net/ttc/complete.htm

Derek Lin's translation is perhaps the most accurate I know JUST edging ahead of John CH Wu's. Both of those translators have intimate knowledge of English as well as Classical Chinese, the latter writes in a more formal style of English.

Other translations have a heavy New Age overtone or are outright interpretations. These two translations present the DDJ as close to the Classical Chinese meaning so you can make your own interpretation of the ancient wisdom rather than have one put on you.

I am an active participant in Derek's Daoism forum and he discusses (quite promptly) his method of translation and choice of words if you ask him. Other than that, I'm not affiliated with Derek or his translation or his forum. The link is to the COMPLETE text of the translation. He's also published the translation which includes an explanation of the meaning. You can get to them from the link if you're really observant :) but I think they're not as complete as the published version.

They have the WHF series as well, or atleast as many as are available.

Yang Jwing Ming also has some nice books on Chinese Qigong, as does

A mate of my at training really said some good things about this text, I'm considering getting a copy.
