I've heard this term used, e.g. "he's a good banger" or "we like
to get together and bang" often. What does it mean? Can you
give examples?

At first, I thought it meant someone that knew how to really dish
it out, but without killing you on tech lines. Then I thought it
meant they were really good at sparring. What does it mean?

well in my opinion.. Banging bare flesh against your partner..
sparring sans pads, techniques done with control yet with speed with contact.. using your blocks (forearms, elbows, shins, knees etc) against a bareknuckled fists and kicks ..etc etc..

Most of our upper belts 'bang' :)

Banging is more of a attitude, a specific way of doing techniques.

When you're banging your techniques you are going full out and the potential for injury is present. If you don't move correctly you will get hit. It means to do your techniques with intensity, focus, & power. When we bang we also learn how to take a technique, how to move, how to breathe, to absorb the blows. Why would you want to get hit? It adds more realism and if you're ever nailed in the street you have some reference to what it feels like to be seriously hit.

Of course all this is tailored to the kind of strike. You wouldn't bang with a arm break, but with a uppercut to the floating rib, you can let fly a little more.

Also you can change the weapons. If a handsword to the throat is in the technique, turn your palm towards the attacker and hit them flat just below the neck, this way you can add some power without running out of training partners.

Well, that actually depends on if you've ever heard some of Jimmy Buffet's songs, maybe someone will get that. Why does it have to be specifically one thing? It's slang, therefore depending on the way it is used, it could have different meanings to different people.

Although I have to admit before I opened this I thought you were going to be asking something about "RELATIONSHIPS" with other students in your class. :ladysman: hee hee hee.

Sweet!!!!! Though, I'd hate to see the foreplay. :boxing:

Just strictly with technique lines, we say "put some stank on it!"

Then you ain't been there yet...

Banging is doing your techniques on each other with gumption. I remember leaving workout with bruise you could be proud of.

I've been there. I've had a good share of bumps bruises, and
hyperextensions. I just didn't know in what aspect it was. Maybe
they fight bare fisted, maybe it was in reference to sparring, etc.

No bad juju intended bruddah. All I was saying is that most people considers banging..well,....banging!:D

Funny...where I came up, banger referred to someone with gang affiliation. Generally, you would not want to fight with a "banger" because the repercussions were often REAL bad.:shooter: :shooter: ;)

You mean they gave up muzzle loaders for MAC-10's, what is this world coming too, next thing you know they'll be stringing up them thar electric candles.....

Just kiddin man...

In Yiliquan, we call "banging" training.

We walk beginners through their techniques to teach them how to move, how to coordinate things, etc., but when it comes time to face down against a partner, the partner attacks like he means it...

You either get out of the way, run away, move to neutralize the attack, or get hit. Those are the only options available, and the first two aren't really options either... :D

Chufeng was demonstrating one of our wrist locks, and the preliminary movement has a slap to the face incorporated into it. Much to the surprise of everyone in class (including me) he flat out ***** slapped me. Full bore, big smack, loud sound of flesh on flesh. Pretty cool, really, because doing that most surely distracts the opponent, making the wrist lock extremely easy to apply!

Man, you guys are OK, with me. :D One question for you though. I haven't quite figured out who the head instructor is?

Head Instructor? They teach that? Wow. Wonder where I might find a school in need of a demo-dummy... :ladysman:

Sifu Starr (a.k.a. Yilisifu) is the Headmaster of Yiliquan and the current Chairman of the Yiliquan Association.

Sifu Hachey (a.k.a. Chufeng) is the Senior Instructor for our club and is the Regional Chairman for the PacNW chapter of the Yiliquan Association.

I am just the current dojo *****/crash test dummy for our club... :D

I like to get hit, I take a hit pretty well, and am always ready to pop back up for another go - unless Chufeng unleashes the Capitol Hill ***** Slap or RyuShiKan hits me in the liver, in which cases I may stay on the floor for a while...

Anybody on MT, anybody at all, if they are in this area, are welcome to come and have a go... ;)

It means the guy can lay the wood to someone's butt. Mike Tyson was a good banger before he went off the deep end.

Nothing like a good slap to the face to get your attention and get the blood flowing...and to Piss you off! :)

I love banging! :D

I haven't heard this term applied in this manner- in fact, we don't generally use a term for doing techniques with enthusiasm. In my dojo there are some who like to go, and a few who play with care. Those of us who like contact know by now when to crank it up :armed:
