Are Standing Arm Break Unsportsmanlike in MMA?

I was reviewing some of the unorthodox techniques in MMA and Waki Gatame(the first lock I was taught) caught my eye. Shinya Aoki applied it beautifully in the video below. I of course had to read the YouTube comments and some were saying the break was unsportsmanlike. I can see part of their...

Reading Kicks & Movement in Sparring.

I use this drill with my students and in my own training. I found it really good for reading the movement of my opponent. As its a safe drill beginners like it and they learn the motion of blocking in addition to being kicked at full speed. It would be interesting to see how practitioners...

1990s Japanese MMA jiu jitsu tournaments (originally posted in my blog)

It's the mid 90s and the martial arts world has discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after the launch of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Why the hate between TMA and MMA?

I've been looking through forums and am seeing so much hate between TMA and MMA / Kickboxing / BJJ, I've also experienced this from people I've met. My question is, where does all the hate come from? I've trained in different TMA's and also in K1-Kickboxing and I just don't get why anyone would...

New "MMA Sport" Idea of Mine

I've mulled over this idea of a different kind of MMA sport fighting and I want to know your thoughts. The foundation as far as rules would be by and large the official MMA or UFC rules with the following alterations: 1. A submission or "tap out" is not the end of the match, it is the end of...

    Muay Thai in MMA

There is no modern MMA without Thai Kickboxing. Low kicks, elbow and knee strikes are integral parts of Mixed Martial Arts. Stand up striking in the UFC is just Muay Thai and Western Boxing of course with some marginal amount of other martial arts. My point is that while there's a lot of boxing...

    Drills to improve your kicks

I really like multi purpose drills and try to incorporate variety in class to disguise repetition. This is a drill I do to help students improve leg strength, actively stretch and work on improving their pendulum & pivot kicks. For sparring it add power to the lead round kick.

    I really like this leglock..

Quick Kill #1..Had great success with this. It's so quick and basic when practised. It sure gets a nasty tap when it's on too. :wtf: Even little points and details would be brilliant to sharpen this up as I find it works for me as an individual, used this very one three times serving in UK LE...
