Well, I just got back from Soo Bahk Do Class. Well.....correction, I got back, ate my two pizzas and now I'm posting. So I was late tonight, got out of work late and then it was raining like crazy, so I waited for it to let up a bit. So I just decided to go for adult's class instead of kid's class.
Tonight, I was bringing the boards for testing. Since I go to the supply store once a week for Gumdo class, I can pick up decent boards from there. Before I came, they were going to Lowe's and buying whatever pine was in stock and having it sawed....no dimensions, no drying, just regular wood. This is good for some, but there are a lot of kids that just can't break inch boards...so we ended up scoring them. Even a lot of the adults couldn't break the boards sometimes. So now, they are white pine boards, standard dimension, kiln dried, perfect for breaking. I took a bundle of 25 regular inch boards and 10 of the half thickness boards. That way the younger kids can just break on the first shot without trying 10 times, then we score it for them, etc. Kind of defeats the purpose of breaking, huh??
Well, when I got there, two red belts were doing forms. One kid that is about 16 or 17....very soft spoken, good martial artist. Just tested for Chodan, but didn't pass. Too bad, he has heart....just too timid. We can't get him to roll or do any ground work because he just doesn't like it. Anyway....So the other red belt doing forms is our resident problem child. HARDCORE ADHD. Can't focus for more than a few seconds, talks back, bad attitude, loses control temper, etc. Well, doing the form with the older kid, he looks like he always does....like an 8th gup. Then, the older kid sits down and the kid does his form....FLAWLESS. I was SHOCKED. This kid can't even do basics, can barely even get in a good stance....but it was perfect. I was SHOCKED.
So the point here...normally I wouldn't talk about the students like this....but I was just in awe. Such a problem kid, put him ALONE and he does the form perfectly. He knows the stuff....he knows it well....
Actually, this kind of confuses me more!
Anyway, so the rest of class was just ill soo sik and ho sin sul. I was with one of the younger kids (each Dan was assigned to a gup to help with their requirements. Next class is a test). So we got through 1-16 all....and his requirements are only 1-11 odd. He knows his stuff. But botton line is that I didn't get to do any of my requirements AGAIN.
I enjoy helping teach classes, but I'm really getting tired of not ever getting to train on the stuff that I need to learn. I am still behind on 3 forms and a bunch of ho sin sul. And that is just testing requirements. Luckily, Dan calsses just started, so I can get some good training and not just teaching. I've kind of kid a wall in my training, because I'm not really learning anything new....and I am losing some of the old stuff! I tihnk I need to practice more....
