Oooo I’m hot

I, evidently, am not.

I don't think however, @Dirty Dog, it should be used unless it's inseparable from the Xenphoro feature set.

It encourages, whether conscious or not, over participation, impulsive posting, and necro'ing. I can provide relevant literature, but it's basically a dopaminergic marker that advertises a user's activity.

For instance, I know @Gyakuto loves to post. But now it's an animated behavioural marker next to his name. He may like it, that's not the point.

Without even so much as reading a user's post, they see how active they are in the forum. Now is that a bad thing? Could be. Especially for new users. It could imply authority. Or even "mania".

In the case of @Chris Parker , whose posts are very deliberately written and often glossed over, some may see his activity as disregard.

Jaron Lanier called this "behaviour modification" in the 90s.

I don't see any use for it except to give people the joy of thinking they're "hot" and motivate more posting. Do we need such patronizing encouragement?

It's more insidious than patronising, it's gamification of discussion, social media, and behaviour.

Very unhealthy. In my opinion.

I actually think it's a marker of you just being  on the forum for consecutive days, and not related to how frequently you post. I don't post every day, but I do read daily, and my number seems to have kept increasing regardless.

Simon is right, it's based on days visited, not days posted, so there's no reason to post daily to try to "keep" the streak.

We do not have the option to turn it off, either way, it's just part of xenforo now.

Gyakuto my sweet, you insufferable pillock, I love you but you have me on ignore. I miss your ignorant philistinism like a flower misses the sun but you just ignore me :'(
