From their website FAQ:
http://www.alsblackbeltclub.com/index.html

When do we begin learning to spar and is it required to earn a black belt?
Sparring is strongly recommended at our school but not required!

How long will it take to earn black belt?
For students committed to their training and attending class a minimum of two to three times each week, a black belt can be achieved in two or two and half years.

Depending on the focus of the school, there is nothing odd about not requiring sparring. We never did sparring in the sense that many/most TKD schools spar because it did not further the objectives of training. As noted previously, it is actually a detriment in many regards. The training time they list seems to be fairly on par with many/most TKD schools I've seen as well. Some Karate schools will test for BB in about 21/2 years.

Can anyone suggest a traditional Tae Kwon Do school in Chicago that teaches old-school practical fighting and not the water-down Mc Dojo crap too many of us see to often ? Any suggestions and advice is both welcome and appreciated. Gracias

OP, the best thing you could have done is ask for suggestions of good traditional TKD schools and then checked them out yourself. The rest just adds for room to debate whats practical fighting and not then your question becomes lost in a debate about that. You know what you want and are looking for.

Chicago is a big town. Just left there yesterday. Was there a week. Even a place 10 miles from you might not be prctical if it takes you 50 minutes 1 way.

What area are you wanting to look? There are lots of places and reputable peope there along with posers and crooks. and a few of us know a more than a few instructors and schools there.

I think the OP worded his question very well. He stated that suggestions and advice were welcome and appreciated. This allows for discussion which worked out and has made a good thread. :)

Chicago has many Masters from Yong-in in different schools all over the city and outlying 'burbs. While they do focus primarily on sparring, they are among the best trained Taekwondo practitioners and instructors available and are more than capable of providing you with quality training regardless of the curriculum given them. You will get out what you put in. Good luck!
