Remembering Courage

Because I was feeling very low and depressed today, lacking the motivation to do anything, not even play LOTRO, I was link-surfing YouTube and gradually wended my way into seeing some clips that recalled to me that one thing we British are supposed to be renowned for is emotional control and pressing on when things seem at their darkest. I thought I would share with you a couple of them from actions in Afghanistan that particularly made me a little more determined to shake off the grief that haunts my every waking minute since my wife died. I truly believe that we all tend to follow the examples we are set and emulate the virtues or vices that we observe in others; so perhaps seeing and hearing of the courage of those who serve can inspire us to be just that shade more determined and brave ourselves:

Love it. Don't rush the grieving procesd my friend. Take as long as you need. You don't need to prove anything to anyone You just can't let it consume you. Live to Honor her. My prayers are with you in this hard time.

When I get down I watch clips of soldiers surprising there pets I don't know why but they always make me smile

Those canine homecomings are a true joy, I do agree - they make you both tearful and smiley at the same time {what my Michelle used to call "happy-sad" when something nice made her cry}.

Altho' the film of it {Zulu} contains quite a few historical inaccuracies, the Battle for Rourke's Drift is one of those moments of courage that makes any British person with any inclinations to valour stand just a little bit straighter when they recall it. For me, seeing this as a young man, certain scenes stick in my mind quite clearly and some of them, so it seems, had a similar effect on others, to the extent that they put them up on YouTube:

:chuckles: You know, thinking on it, we don't really go in for great movie heroes over here. I am struggling to think of one other than Bond. Our 'heroes/icons' are far more likely to be 'a bit on the wild side', if not downright criminal, or unbelievably bumbling and stupid.
