I received word this morning that Sifu Eric Ling passed peacefully overnight. He struggled with a series of heath issues over the last decade and while this news was not unexpected, it still hits hard for those of us who knew and learned from him.
I also also mourn the tremendous loss of information that I fear passed with him. I feel fortunate for the lessons and qualities that I did receive and they will forever change my training and lessons to my students.
To my knowledge, Ling was the best remaining linage holding authority on FuZhou Whooping Crane. He also held a lineage for Fujain Five Ancestors Gung Fu and was perpetually curious and learned through a community of masters of credible traditional, southern gung fu practitioners. He was not a lineage snob or claimer of exclusivity, he really loved Gung Fu and respected the community of dedicated practitioners. He was heavily featured in and instrumental to the documentary Needle Through Brick, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in traditional southern gung fu or anyone wanting to remember Sifu Ling fondly.
On a personal level, when he visited us, we were in awe of his gung fu and had to balance that with his passion for the NBA and very American experiences, like burger places. Rest in peace, Ling and thank you for all that you did.
