Greetings All,

Has anyone practiced your MA with buddies from a different style?

Ever tried your knife defense techniques against a partner that knows how to use a knife?

Used your techniques against punches with a boxer?

What did you notice?

Did you change anything (work around) to make it more effective?

Anything helpful you can share with the rest of us?

A common tactic is not to fight their fight.

I purposely said "with" and not "versus" in the tread b/c I do not intend to start a my daddy can beat up your daddy response.

Thanks in advance for sharing.

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
I noticed some adaptations had to be made such as more boxing like foot movements instead of flat foot stances. Also parries more often than hard blocks.

Something to share will be to try to adapt your fighting to deal with their ways. Cross train often, as most of the traditional styles were not based on defending against other styles.

I love doing this and IMO, its a huge plus for your training!! :) Some frown upon it, some say you'll be a jack of all trades, master of none, but I look at it like this....if I can take something from someone who is better in a certain area than I, work that one thing, and improve myself, how can you go wrong?

One major difference is that you'll find the person you're working with doesnt move like the people you're more familiar with. If all you work with is the people in your school, everyone is pretty much programmed to know the response, etc. But work with someone different, and you'll have to make adjustments.

Once I started doing blade and stick work with FMA people, I had my eyes opened. One thing that many people forget about, is the opponents other hand. Yet train with someone who does Arnis, Kali, etc and you'll see that their other hand comes into play alot!

Takedown/tackle defenses were another area. Nothing wrong with the ones in the Kenpo system, but work them with someone who really knows how to shoot and you may need to make some changes. You can still keep the basic fundamental of the Kenpo defense, but supercharge it a little, courtesy of the BJJ stylist. :)

Correct address sir! No one grapples better than the grapplers. No one uses the knife like FMAists, etc.. If you can get your ways up to speed to deal with the specialists, you'll be fine for whoever else. No Kenpoka will shoot or grapple like a BJJer! It is invaluable!

Well, I've trained once with a friend of mine who practises Aikido and I noticed that many of the nerve points that are used in Aikido, are also used in Pencak Silat. The only difference is that it's taught to them (that a nerve is being targeted) and we 'just do it'.

All the time mate. I do some of my training in an MMA gym. I box with boxers (and get my *** kicked). I can't use my legs so I'm at a disadvantage- but I find it blissfully rewarding.

I think to make it more effective- you have to set 'parameters' before the session. If that makes sense. Agree on what weapons will be used, whether it is striking and grappling, or just on or the other etc..etc...

We learn so much from each other. I wish we all had time to do it more frequently.

Work, Wife, Kids.......they always interfere.
