I’ve used PNF flexibility training in the past with mixed results, but never heard this explanation for it. I understood the contraction inhibited the stretch reflex (a reflex that opposes stretching beyond one’s current range). This video has a different explanation.
Has anyone use PNF with any success?

PNF has been around for a long time. Since you are training at the extreme of most motions, care must be taken not to stress the joints. It is easier to do in these unnatural positions.

PNF was pretty much all we ever used. It helped more than we could have imagined or hoped for.

Oh, really? Did you implement it as suggested in the video?

For certain. I would put it in the upper-level athlete category for most people since it is usually well into the phase of training your body it is okay to move in extreme ways/motions.

It was first taught to us by a chiropractor we all used. He had a Doctorate in Kinesiology.

there's this wrinkle to it where you do a whole minute contraction at the end to get that last bit of ROM and it's pretty agonising. Works though.

When I made my Olympic run, I had a trainer who was a former Olympiad (T&F). He turned me onto it and it was part of our regimen.
Man oh man, that was good times.
