Unfortunately credit cards often are needed. Trying to book a hotel, or even a campsite without one? Good luck.

They take debit cards, as a general thing - although not always.

I suppose it depends on who you're calling; my debit card says "Visa" on it, and I've used it for all the same things I use a credit card for - and it has, therefore, cut way down on my need for a credit card.

I have not had any trouble using my debit card to book over the phone for a variety of things and services (that includes air fare and hotel/motel stays, etc.) They check on the card for fund availability before approving. I make sure I have my money deposited in the debit account before I use the card.

Mine, too (says "Visa"). Sometimes I don't even tell them it's a debit card. They ask for a credit card and I give them the debit. Let them think its a credit card if it makes them feel better; it always works. Never had a problem.
